My conversations with HER - Part 18

My conversations with HER - Part 18 – Written on 27th November 2011:

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu,

17th October 2011:

I hurried to meet Guruji & as I entered the room, I saw Guruji talking to someone..I realized that I maybe interrupting them, so I thought I would come back a few minutes later but Guruji asked me to come on in.....As I sat next to Guruji, I suddenly realized that I didn't know what to say.....I was so busy in praying & planning to meet Guruji that I hadn't thought about what to say to Him, when I meet Him...So, I started with the usual, I am so-and-so and I come from such-and-such a place and just spoke whatever thought came to me.....You see Guruji, I didn't ask you anything related to Srividya because you {and Siddha Guru Swaprakasananda} have already given me the answer during the online Srividya class, by saying "Don't you think the mantras have the power to guide you?".....So, after some casual conversations, I told Guruji that I had come to meet Him and to get a personal deeksha from Him...What was this personal deeksha??....I had no idea....All that I knew, was that Guruji had told someone, during the online class that "Sometime in your lifetime, it would be good if you come and take a personal deeksha from me"....That's all I knew Guruji.

Guruji: What do you want?

Me: I will take whatever you give me Guruji...

You see Guruji, I couldn't ask you for anything, not with Sri Bhaskararaya makhi literally "sitting on my shoulders" and reminding me of my 'asuddha bhakti'

{As I type this: Guruji, I told you "I came to meet you and get a personal deeksha"....That by itself was me asking you for something --- a personal deeksha.....But at that time I didn't realize it Guruji....I indeed did have "selective amnesia".. }

And as I prostrated to your feet, I was reminded of some article that I had read & also a certain topic that was discussed during the online Srividya class...I vaguely remembered that someone, while talking about the Dasa Maha Mudras, had asked about a certain mudra, which when shown to a deity/person would enable one to "take away some of the power" of the deity/person.....Guruji had said something about how even if that were to happen, He believed that one can "re-charge" oneself and in-reality one doesn't really lose any of one's powers/energy....And also, didn't I read somewhere that the Guru’s feet are worshipped or revered because all the Guru’s shakti dwells in the feet....So, as I prostrated to your feet, I made sure that I didn't touch your feet....You see Guruji, I had thought "Guruji has already given me so much...I don't want to take away any of His Shakti.".......And that is why I didn't touch your feet Guruji.

Guruji, as you gave me "a mantra" and I repeated it after you, all that I recognized was that it also contained the 15-lettered Panchadasi mantra....When you told me the name of the mantra, all I heard was the "Sodasi" part because, as you noticed, my son Pranav was constantly bothering me & interrupting our conversations.....But I had read about the Sodasi mantra & how this mantra was kept in most secret and I was overwhelmed that you gave it to me...And that is why I asked you why this mantra is kept so secret and why it is said "Give away your empire and even your head, but never reveal the mantra"....As you explained and wrote on the nearby blackboard, I listened to whatever you said.....Though at-that-time I didn't 100% understand the meaning Guruji, I didn't want to bother you & ask you to again explain it to me......So, I had told BRAHMAN " Please remember what Guruji said and explain it to me later."

Me: Guruji, I have a very bad memory and I will forget this mantra even before I leave this place.

Guruji: Write it down

So, I grabbed my purse and my notebook & wrote down the mantra as Guruji repeated it and asked me to say-it-as-I-wrote-it.

And as I sat there, being overwhelmed and feeling very guilty that I didn't bring my Guruji anything...

Guruji: Come and give me a hug..

It was so difficult for me to not cry, to hold back my tears and I thought "Guruji heard me....He knows all about me, even all of my unspoken words"

All of my unspoken words:

During the last few weeks, as I thought of my Guruji, I had an overwhelming desire to hug Him.....I had thought "Doesn't a Mother hug her child and vice-versa??.....Isn't my Guruji = HER, and if so, why can't I hug my Guruji??.....Why do they say that one should only bow to the Guru's feet?? Doesn't my Guru reside in my heart, and if so, why can't I hug my Guruji?....Doesn't Hanuman say that Lord Rama & Sita Devi always reside in His heart....Can I hug my Guruji, will He let me??.......I didn't know if it was proper to do so but those thoughts/emotions did come to me....

And as I struggled to hold-back-my-tears and hugged my Guruji

Me: Guruji, what do I give you as Guru Dakshina?

Guruji: I don't want anything

And I thought "I'm still a beggar...I have only taken from Him.....What do I give Him?...How am I ever going to repay Him??"

You see Guruji, I had forgotten to tell you what I had decided to give you as Guru Dakshina.....I didn't remember to tell you that I have decided to give you my-share-of-the-right as Pranav's mother.....Such is my memory.

Pranav seemed all too eager to share his stories with Guruji and if I remember right Guruji, I think you hugged him too...I had thought "What a blessed soul is Pranav.....It took me 33 years to stand before my Guruji and Pranav is able to do it when he is just 3 years old."

I realized that there were people waiting outside to meet Guruji & so Pranav and I left.....As we prayed to the life-sized Khadgamala GODDESSs in Devipuram, there were a few names that I recognized from the Khadgamala Stotram and when I stood before Varahi Devi, I thanked HER profusely for HER blessings........Pranav was happy to go, see, touch and sometimes shake-hands with the GODDESSs and would ask me the names of each of them & I would read out from the label...There was a staircase that I noticed and Pranav & I climbed up to go & finally stand before HER - Goddess Sahasrakshi, known to me as Lalithamba...As we did pradakshina to Lalithamba, the following thoughts came to me:

  • Ask HER for a daughter. SHE will give it to you.
  • No, Ashuddha bhakti.....How can I ask HER for a pebble {i.e a daughter} when SHE has just given me a diamond { i.e what-I-thought-was-the-Sodasi mantra}.....I don't want a daughter.
  • Don't say that you don't want a daughter.
  • Ok. I don't want to say that I don't want a daughter.......Lalithamba, what are these thoughts coming to me?? Can't I atleast pray to you silently without these commentaries going on within me?.... Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu

The lady who did the kumkum archana asked us to offer kumkum to HER Srichakra and so Pranav & I did so....The only thought that came to me was {in Tamil - Sri Chakra vasiniyae namaha……Sri Chakrathil irukira kodana kodi Devigalaku namaha }whose English meaning is "My salutations to the ONE who lives in Srichakra....My salutations to the crores of Devis who live in Srichakra"

And as Pranav & I thanked HER & we were about to go downstairs, the lady casually mentioned that there was another staircase which people usually use to climb up and the one that we had used was the one to go down.....I thought "Lalithamba, even the staircase that I took to climb up {to come to YOU} is the wrong one.....I just saw a staircase & climbed it....Anyway, it brought me to YOU & that's all it matters to me."

We then went to meet Guruamma, prostrated to Her feet & seeked Her blessings too...We went to the Kamakhya temple and I remembered it from the pictures that I had seen....The 1000 lingams were indeed a sight to see and I remembered seeing it in the "Devipuram empowerment video".....Then it was back to meet Guruji again to seek His blessings again & say bye to Him....I had just one question to ask Guruji

Me: Guruji, when should I chant the mantra that you just gave me?

Guruji: Chant it all the time.

We had lunch at the canteen in Devipuram, met a few volunteers there and also paid the money for the homas done during Navarathri....It was a blessed day and while on my way back, as I started chanting the what-I-thought-was-the-Sodasi mantra, I counted the letters

Me: {Thinking} There are more than 16 letters in this mantra...How could this be Sodasi?......But if I take the 15 letter Panchadasi as just 3 letters, then the count comes to 16....Maybe this is the way "Sodasi" is counted......How do I know??...They keep these mantras so secret.... What does it matter, if this is what Guruji asked me to chant all the time, it's good enough for me....

And as I chanted it, after a while, I could smell what-seemed-like-sandalwood.....I checked the car dashboard to see if the taxi driver had an incense burning and there was none...

My conversations with HER - Part 15

My conversations with HER - Part 15   – Written on 22nd November 2011:

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu

The month of September was almost coming to an end and the Navarathri festival was about to begin.....I thought "Last Navarathri was when the whole 'researching about Srichakra' started when I didn't know what the Srichakra Navavarana puja was.....What a journey it has been in the past 1 year !!".......I had an urge to participate in the pujas this year too.....

SHE:
Ashuddha bhakti

Me:
Right!....I forgot about it....Thanks for the reminder Lalithamba...

And I wondered how Sri Bhaskararaya makhi looked, because he had so apparently "sat on my shoulders" to remind me of my ashuddha bhakti....I remembered seeing a picture of him on aacharya's Facebook page but was not able to find it......So, I googled his image and the only 'image' that cameup was a picture of aacharya

SHE: Now you know who your aacharya is...

I was also reminded of a conversation that I had with aacharya a while ago and though I don't exactly remember what my question was, I think it was something like "How does one know when one is THERE, ONE with IT?"......I remember exactly what aacharya's response was "The question does not arise".

Navarathri was about to begin and the urge to participate in the pujas was still there and only getting stronger.....I wondered "Lalithamba, I don't want ANYTHING from YOU, but just a chance to participate in YOUR pujas...I don't have ANYTHING to ask of YOU".....How was I to know what to do?.....So, I thought I'll check with my husband & let him make the decision

My husband:
Didn't you already have some pujas done a few months ago?? Why another one?

Me: Didn't you already receive a paycheck last month?? Why do you need another paycheck this month??

My husband: This is just going to lead to another argument.

Me: No. It won't...If you say no, there'll be no pujas and this 'item' will go on to "your list" of "how things happened the way you wanted it".

My husband:  {After a while}...Fine, you do what you want within a budget of "X" rupees and add this "item" to "your list" of "how things happened the way you wanted it" !!!

Navarathri was to begin in 2 days & my family signedup to sponsor the Srichakra Navavarana puja for 3 days ---- one day each for Durga devi, Sri Lakshmi & Saraswati at the Hindu temple of St. Louis ....The next day as I was browsing the Devipuram website, I noticed that there were homas offered during Navarathri and anyone could sponsor it....I called them right away and requested for the Lalitha homam, Vag Devata homam & Dasa Maha Vidya homam.....Why did I choose those homas??....Because I felt-like-it.

During Navarathri, I did the only thing that I had time for - chant the Khadgamala stotra in the morning and at the end of it say "I'm chanting this just to make YOU happy Lalithamba..I don't have anything to ask of YOU....And I don't want YOUR sword....Here, take it back".....I had also finished drawing another Srichakra and it came out very well.....I thought about a few people to send this to and scanned it & emailed it to them....I also felt-like-sending the Srichakra to Mr. Vidyaakar at Udavum Karangal - a non-profit center for humane services....English meaning of "Udavum Karangal" = Helping hands......I've been associated with Mr Vidyaakar for the last 10 years and felt that SHE, who is the "Mother of all" could very well go to Udavum Karangal this Navarathri & be the MOTHER of all the people there....We do visit their center at Thiruverkadu, Chennai wheneever we visit India and it's the most beautiful place to be.....So, I also emailed it to Mr Vidyaakar along with a brief decription of "what-a-Srichakra-is" and requested that he share it with all members and all offices of Udavum Karangal.

A few nights, during Navarathri, I was suddenly wide-awake at around 1am...

Me: BRAHMAN, why did YOU wake me?....I told YOU to wake me up at 3.30am {Yes, I tell BRAHMAN that, so that incase I don't hear my morning alarm, atleast BRAHMAN will wake me up}......I'm not YOU BRAHMAN.....I can't function with just 4 hours of sleep...I don't understand how YOU can be awake all the time......Why did YOU wake me  now?

An inner voice: They are doing the homam at Devipuram

And it happened on 3 days during Navarathri, when those 3 homas were scheduled-to-be-done at Devipuram.

One Navarathri evening, as I was preparing the evening dinner, my thoughts were oscillating between Lalithamba & Adi Shankaracharya....

Me: O Lalithamba, isn't it because YOU were with Sankaracharya that he was able to answer & defeat all those people in spiritual debates. Isn't it because YOU verily sat on Sri Bhaskararachrya's shoulder, that he is recognised even today as a great Srividya Upasaka....Isn't it because of YOUR grace that an uneducated what-seemed-like-a-foolish person like Kalidasa became Maha kavi Kaalidasa.....Why do YOU not do the same to me too? Why are YOU not with me? YOU are being partial...It's not fair...

Pat came HER response: Adi Shankaracharya never questioned MY WILL....He never hesitated when I asked him to do something...How many times have I instinctly told you to write down your experiences..Have you done it yet?

What do I do, when SHE so clearly has me cornered...I had no answer except being silent {for a while at least}..

Me: Lalithamba, I'm scared...I don't have the spiritual knowledge to backup my writings. What do I do if people question me? I don't know Sanskrit & can't even seem to correctly remember where I read what...

SHE: Didn't you just say that Kalidasa was a foolish person before MY grace?

Me: Silence...I still scared amma....

SHE: During the Deva tharpanam & Rishi tharpanam, didn't you say "How can there be darkness when there is a million watt bulb with me?

Me: {Thinking} I did say that, didn't I?

SHE: What's the point of you listening non-stop to Bhavani Ashtakam if you haven't yet learnt to surrender?

Me: Will YOU be with me always like the way YOU were with Adi Shankaracharya?

Silence

Me: You just told me the answer, didn't YOU?....That Adi Shankaracharya never questioned YOUR WILL....Ok...I'll do as YOU say, but  before I do that, can I test YOU? I agree that this is me still questioning YOU, but I want to be sure that it's really YOU & not just my thoughts wandering.....Remember last month, I read on that blog about Bala {Bala Tripura Sundari}.....That lady had written that Bala came in her dream & she had tried to lift HER but it was impossible because SHE was so heavy!!.... Well, if Bala - the daughter is heavy, how come YOU O Lalithamba were able to sit on Bhaskararachrya's shoulder? I'm unable to understand this.

SHE: The answer lies in Khadgamala Stotram....Remember the different Siddhis? Anima siddhi, Lagima Siddhi, Garima Siddhi etc.....Bala, in that lady's dream was exhibiting Garima Siddhi - Siddhi of being heavy and ME while sitting on Bhaskararachrya's shoulder was exhibiting Lagima Siddhi - Siddhi of being lighter than air

Me:

Ofcourse, such a simple answer...One more question....I had read that once you have a Guru, before one embarks on something new, one has to consult with his/her Guru...Doesn't that mean that I need my Guruji's permission & blessing before I start writing down my experiences? Can I start writing after I meet him in India in the next few weeks?

SHE: What did Guruji tell you during your online classes? What did he tell you during the very 1st class??

Me: That he was always with us and there has never been a moment when he wasn't....He had also asked us not to compare with others...He had said "You dont have to worry why I asked person 'X" to do "A,B,C" and "Y" to do "D,E,F"...What's right for "X" need not be so for "Y"

SHE: Ditto

Me: {Still not entirely convinced that I should start writing before I personally checked with Guruji}

SHE: What did you think when Guruji said "That he was always with us and there has never been a moment when he wasn't"?

Me: I had thought, "The only person who has always been with me, lifetime-after-lifetime is my atma- a form of BRAHMAN....If Guruji says he's always been with me, it means that he's refering to my atman = BRAHMAN"

SHE: What was his response when someone questioned him about praying to Guru Padukaas on top of one's head?

Me: Guruji had said " Whose's head?...Your head??...His head??...Her head?....My head??" and also something about not to take it to literally mean on top of one's head..I can't recall his exact words.

SHE: What did Guruji say about what his thoughts were when Siddha Guru Swaprakashananda gave him all the mantras?? And what was Siddha Guru's answer to Guruji's question?

Me: That his first question to his Siddha Guru was "How will it work when you are in Anakapallae and I'm going to be in Bombay? To which Siddha Guru Swaprakashananda asked him "Don't you think the mantras have the power to guide you?"

Silence

Me:

"Don't you think the mantras have the power to guide you?" Are YOU guiding me like the way YOU guided Guruji??

Silence

Me: So, If Guruji = BRAHMAN who has always been with me; if YOU in the form of the mantras are guiding me, then it is ok for me to start writing?... Now, what was Guruji's answer to the "Guru Padukaas on top of one's head" question?....Didn't he say something about how the Guru is always with us, within us, guiding us?

Ok...I'm going to start writing and tomorrow being Vijayadasami, makes it all the more special.

Guruji, I send this email to you on Vijayadasami, as a token of gratitude for your teachings....All this is, because of YOUR grace & guidance...

And so started the writings......All this is, because of my Guruji's grace & guidance....

My conversations with HER - Part 12

My conversations with HER - Part 12 – Written on 18th November 2011:

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu

Happenings after Guruji came into my life - September 2011:

After Guruji came into my life, both before & during the online Srividya classes, I was able to better understand HER....I had thought "Guruji calls HER as the AWARENESS"

Me: That thought during my Maha-deeksha at Kalki Bhagavan's Oneness University in May 2006.....When the padukas were placed on my head, I had a glimpse of Lord Shiva and Mt. Kailash ....But the thought "Why didn't I see Parvathy Devi?"......That thought was YOU wasn't it Lalithamba??.....That awareness that I didn't see YOU, that was YOU wasn't it??

SHE: Go on and accept what you thought at that time....

Me: Very clever of YOU Lalithamba.....YOU made me think that "Why didn't I see Parvathy Devi??..SHE must have gone out to save-the-world-or-something.....

I was beginning to realize one thing --- how much of my life was controlled by my fears......Fear of almost everything --- insects, bugs, cockroaches, dogs, cats, what-people-thought etc.....Back in June 2011, while breaking my Nirjala Ekadasi fast, I was surprised to see that there was a dog infront of our house......Not once in the 11 years that I've been in the USA, not once in the last 6 years that we live at our present house, did a stray dog EVER come to our house.....All those stories that I had read in Amar Chitra Katha, about Gods coming in the form of dogs to test a devotee came to mind....I wanted to give the dog some food & all that was available in the morning was the milk after doing the SHREEM BRZEE abhisekam to the Lakshmi Saligram....So, I poured some milk & opened the garage door to keep the bowl outside....The dog did try to come near me & I was frightened.....I thought "If it bites me, I'll have to have injections to couteract it's bite".....And I stepped away saying "I don't know who you are, but I am frightened of dogs...So, please forgive me for not recognising you."

I was reminded of the above dog incident a number of times and wondered which God it might have been....

SHE: Isn't it enough to know that it was BRAHMAN in the form of a dog?

Maybe it was indeed due to all the prayers & pujas that were done until now, but I was able to face-my-fears....One day, while dropping my son at his daycare, I noticed that there was a black cat sitting on the walkway leading to the entrance.....My normal reaction would have been to take a different route, but I decided to be brave and walk-past-the-cat.....I was scared too but my only hope was "This too is a form of BRAHMAN"....And the cat did nothing.....It just sat there minding-it's-own-business.....The next day, as if to test me again, there were 2 cats sitting on the walkway and all I did was close my eyes and chant BRAHMAN, BRAHMAN........My 3 year old son was braver than me & wanted to 'play with the cats' and all I could think of was "Are the cats vaccinated?....Are their nails clipped/cut??...If it scratches me, will I need an injection?".....FEAR in different forms, but FEAR nevertheless

After the frequent thoughts of BRAHMAN i.e after the Varahi puja done at Meppad Temple, I was able to atleast recognize that I have so many fears.....My only consolation - everything that I was scared of was BRAHMAN, including the pitch black darkness at night.....And I was searching for the practical experience of BRAHMAN....So, I told myself "I need to face my fears."

Sometime after Guruji came into my life, while reading some Srividya material, I read that Srividya was described as "Atmavidya, Brahmavidya"

Me: Brahmavidya? ...That story that I repeatedly read as a child, in Amar Chitra Katha - Vishwamitra, the fight between Sage Vasistha and Sage Vishwamitra over Viswamitra being acknowledged as a Brahmarishi......That was Brahmavidya......That is the same as Srividya???....If only I had known that both are the same, I would have never pursued Srividya.....Why??....Because that storybook was so fascinating and it made me wonder "How much of effort Vishwamitra had to put in....How much of penance he had to do..."

Very clever of you O Lalithamba..

Another thing that I observed during the online Srividya classes, was Guruji's behaviour towards us....He was so free, so casual and in one of the classes he actually apologized to someone when the student mentioned something about getting the (mis)information on the Devipuram website....That had such an impact on me....I thought "Guruji apologized.....Why?...Because that student said that something might have been misrepresented on the Devipuram website....If my Guru can be so humble, then why do I have a BIG FAT EGO??....If my Guru can apologize to people, why can't I??.....As is the Guru, so is the disciple."

Thereafter, my husband was a little surprised with my 'you do what you want' attitude...I had to learn to let-go of the little things in life, to let go of always wanting things to happen my way.....

My Husband: Are you ok??...Do you need to see a doctor or something?

Me: I'm just fine...And by the way, that 'list' that you were keeping track of, to see how many things have happened according to the way you wanted it, you may have to update that list !!!

Maybe Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi had indeed sat on my shoulders, but anytime, spiritually speaking, I was to think of doing any pujas or homas, I was reminded of my 'ashuddha bhakti'

Me: But I do say "Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu" isn't it?...So it all goes to YOU anyway....

SHE: When you don't have anything specific to ask of ME, why do you want to invoke ME in fire/homa to tell ME to do MY job? Am I not doing what I want anyway ?

!!!!

Me: But Lalithamba, it's 'my' part of the merit that I'm giving away.....My husband & son are still benefitted right?? It's upto YOU to make them also giveup their share of the merit...How many people think about the "cosmic account"?....Isn't everyone worried about their own "individual account" of merit & demerit?..... And if YOU didn't want me to consider those pujas or homas, why did YOU give me the thought?...Either way it's ALL YOUR doing.

Silence.

Sometime in September 2011, we again visited the St. Louis Hindu Temple and this time, I gave the priest there, a drawing of Srichakra that I had recently drawn....He was overjoyed to receive it, especially with Navarathri just a few weeks away...Also, we signedup for the Dattatreya abisekham to be done during the following weekday and I silently thanked HIM for all HIS blessings......Last December, when we had performed the Dattatreya abisekham, I really didn’t know very much about HIM........Now, HE was sitting right beside my Siddha Guru Swaprakasananda's photo...

It was also sometime during this month that I happened to buy the book Vasistha's Yoga and I had just started reading it.....It was all beginning to sound similar - BRAHMAN, AWARENESS, CONSCIOUSNESS......Different names, same thing.

I had thought "All that I know is the theory part - Aham Brahmasmi, Tat Tvamasi, I am THAT, I am not the body etc......What use is this theory when I haven't yet practically experienced any of it....If in academics, the score is 80% theory and 20% practicals, then in spirituality, it's almost the opposite, with 20% being theory and 80% practical experience.....Of that 20% theory, I know perhaps less than 0.1% "

SHE: {in Tamil} Therinjadhu kai alavu, theriyaadhadhu kadal alavu {English meaning - What you know you can fit into the palms of your hand, what you don't know is as vast as the ocean..}

Me: My favorite Tamil proverb....Isn't that something that I've always wondered about?....Lalithamba, what am I going to do with the 20% theory part when I am repeatedly, consistently failing the practical exam part?......Forget about the 20% theory part, no matter how much I know,

What I know = fits in the palm of my hand and
What I don't know = as vast as the ocean.

In that case, what's the use of the theory part??.......Unless one becomes the ocean itself.....Give me the 80% practical experience part...That's good enough for me...

Silence.

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu

My conversations with HER - Part 10

My conversations with HER - Part 10 - Written on 14th November 2011:

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu

(cont)....."Blessed" July 2011:

I was to later learn that the reason SHE wanted me to stay back at home was because all SHE wanted, was for me to "mentally renounce my attachments" to my family.....I would later think "That thing that Bhagavat Gita talks about - One who see action in inaction and inaction in action, That's what YOU were trying to teach me, wasn't it Lalithamba?"

Since it was now proved that I did indeed have a big ego, I did go & apologize to my husband.....I did tell him "You said I could do whatever I wanted with my salary"......And he said "Why do you not remember the other part of that sentence?? .....If you were brave enough to do as you please, you must have been ready to walk out as well......What's stopping you from doing that??".......The best answer to that question, at that time???...SILENCE.

The repercussions were not as severe as I had imagined or feared it to be......I thought "Maybe SHE has indeed taken responsibility for my actions"

The other thing that I had done was to sign my husband and I for the Morning Fire labs {Homas} at the San Diego Pillai retreat center for the whole month of July......This was a morning homam that I had been calling-in to listen to, since Christmas 2010.....That 40 minutes in the morning was the best part of the day......It's really amazing that foreigners/Americans could be so devoted to Vedic practices...

Also while randomly browsing about Srividya, I had found the Sri Rajarajeswari Peetham website at Rush, New York....While looking at the Guru Lineage I noticed that it had Guruji's name and I thought "Guruji seems to be following me these days.....Or am I following him??...Didn't the Meppad temple guru lineage also mention Guruji's name?? "

At the Sri Rajarajeswari temple in New York, there was to be a Chandi homam in July and my family participated in that as well.....While again re-reading this website:

An inner voice: Do you not recognize this temple??

Me: Could this be the same temple?? In July 2007, didn't we stop at this temple on our way back from Niagara Falls?? It was almost noon and the temple was empty....We prayed for a few minutes and I really liked HER idol at this temple....While reading the notice-board at the temple, I had read that the main priest of the temple was from Srilanka and I had thought "Oh...I  thought this was an Indian temple.....What a coincidence that they have the same forms of Gods in Srilanka too"

I didn't know anything better about the background of the temple.

Guru Poornima - July 2011:

This was the first Guru Poornima that I remember.....Last year, this was just-another-day & I didn't know the significance of this day....However this year, I wanted to thank Sage Veda Vyasa but didn't know how.....So, I did the only thing that I could think of.....That day, while performing the 'Karunya tharpanam', at the end of it, I also offered Karunya tharpanam to Sage Veda Vyasa and any gurus that I may have had in the previous lifetimes.....I had said " I don't know how else to thank you Sage Veda Vyasa & any gurus that I may have had in the past."......I had told Sage Vyasa "You had mentioned in the Krishna Bhagavatham that every person born is automatically indebted to 3 people - pitrus, rishis and gods.....I'm repaying my debts to the pitrus but don't know how to repay my debts to the other 2 categories of people.......You know, in this 21st century, whenever you go to a bank & take a home loan, they give you a "repayment plan".....It's not fair that you just say that one is indebted to these people without giving a "repayment option" to fully repay the debt { The Krishna Bhagavatham book I had read mentioned that you repay pitrus by begetting a son, repay rishis by reading the scriptures and repay gods by performing homas.......Atleast that's what I remembered}........So, until I learn how to properly do the 'guru tharpanam' and 'deva tharpanam', I offer Karunya tharpanam to you today.......Please forgive my ignorance for not knowing how to thank you properly and please accept this karunya tharpanam......And by the way, could you please soon send me my Guru ??"

That whole day, I was paranoid if something "bad" would happen.....Why??....You see, I had just changed a whole category of tharpanam......I had offered Veda Vyasa tharpanam in the 'karunya tharpanam' category.....Whenever the fear came that I have made a mistake, I said "I didn't do anything.....Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu"

Also, on this day, was when Arjunaacharya mentioned that the pooja will be started at the Meppad temple in Kerala....

I had thought "Where are you my Guru??.....How much longer should I wait??..." I had read that the bond between a Guru & disciple is age-old and continues lifetime after lifetime.....I had thought "Are you thinking of me, my Guru??...Are you as eager to meet me, as I am to meet you??"

Arjunaacharya's Om Shivoham ring-tone and it's TSUNAMI effect:

How could a person do so much by doing so little??.....Answer: By having the perfect cell phone  ring tone !!!

When I had first telephoned Arjunaacharya, I was startled by his cell phone ring tone.....It was the first time I listened to the Om Shivoham song from the Tamil movie "Naan Kadavul"....There was something magical about the song....A few weeks later, when I called him back, I was actually praying that he not answer his phone.....Why???....I wanted to listen to his ring-tone and needed a reason to call him back again....I don't know if Arjunaacharya remembers it, but I called him twice on that day....And this time, I noted down the words of the song....Why??...So that I could 'google' it....

The first link that I found was some Vijav TV show and as soon as the singer Vijay Prakash started singing, all that I could think of was the singer in King Akbar's court --Tansen.....I remembered reading somewhere that Tansen could make the leaves of a tree fall down by just singing in the appropriate raga.....Vijay Prakash's voice was a voice fit to sing for Lord Shiva.....More googling followed, which finally lead me to the Om Shivoham song .....Maybe it was because of the headphones or maybe it was something else, but that song went right into my soul --- and shook it up......Now, how can something as simple as a song have that kind of an effect on you??....I must have spent a few hours listening to that song...

I was also reminded of aacharya's note on Facebook that spoke about an upasaka's comment after listening to a music performance that "listening to a mature music performance was equal to performing a Srichakra puja"......Since I knew neither {music nor Srividya} I had mentioned that the next time I listen to 'a music' that moves me, maybe I would think "That's what that upasaka meant".....So I emailed the song to aacharya and to make a long story short, I learnt 3 things from that email chain
  1. Aacharya was a 5th generation direct disciple of Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi.....Who was this Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi?? I had no idea.
  2. I still had an ego
  3. I found my "Viswakarma"......One of my 3 conditions on my "giving-something-back-to-the-society" project

First, I had to see what the movie "Naan Kadavul" was all about...And I did....And what an excellent movie it is!!!.....There were 2 Sanskrit dialogues in the movie that plunged right into my soul......I had no clue what they meant....I found it on youtube and wondered if aacharya could help me understand what the dialogues meant....So, I sent him the link to those scenes....And there was no response and I couldn't find the meaning online too.....I had asked HER "Did YOU ask aacharya not to respond???....YOU must have, if he isn't answering......Why did YOU do that??....He is the only guy who I know, who knows Sanskrit and YOU asked him not to respond...Well, GOD helps those who help themselves right??....If noone is going to help me, I'll help myself....I give myself some credit, I must have known Sanskrit in atleast one of my many previous lifetimes......And I know that because these dialogues have such an impact on me".....And I watched those scenes, again and again and again......I wrote down word by word the initial Sanskrit verses:

"Janma karma ca me divyam, evam yo vetti tattvatah, tyaktva deham punar janma

Satya Prabavam, Divya Prakasham, Mantra Swaroopam, Nishkalamkoham, Nijapoorna bodham, Gatya Gadmaham, Nitya Brahmoham, Satya Pramanam, Moola Prameyam, Ayam Brahmasmi, Aham Brahmsami "

The first line I found in Bhagavat Gita, Chapter 4 - text 9....The rest of it, all I understood at first was "...........All that is BRAHMAN, I am BRAHMAN"....And I had thought "I know that.....I know all that is BRAHMAN & I am BRAHMAN, but what I don't know is WHAT is BRAHMAN??".....How is it that IT is present in all??...How can one be present in opposites like fire & water, earth & sky, air and rain??...And why are the Gods helpless without BRAHMAN....The first time I read about BRAHMAN was perhaps when I was still in school, maybe when I was around 10 years old.....My father had brought us the Amar chitra katha -Tales from upanishads storybook and my first thought was "How can Amar chitra katha make such a spelling mistake...Shouldn't it be "brahmin" instead of "BRAHMAN"??......Well, the stories in the book had nothing to do with "brahmin" and the 1st seed of curiosity was then planted.....What is this BRAHMAN???

The movie Naan Kadavul also spoke about how one doesn't take rebirth if a "particular group of aghori" bless your burning corpse....It did feel scary and made me think "Why am I watching these kind of movies??" .....And then I thought "If I'm searching for the Higher Truth and if BRAHMAN is that highest truth, then I must be comfortable enough atleast watching these scenes.....These aghoris too are forms of BRAHMAN....Their path too is, one way to reach the Higher Truth, even though it may not be my path..."

July 2006 Kadambari magazine:

The main thing that initially attracted me to Srividya was the mention that inorder for a person to be initiated into tantra, it must be his/her last incarnation on earth or if a person gets initiated, it becomes his/her last birth...And while researching about Srividya, I had found the 2006 July Kadambari magazine on scribd and while reading it, on page 45 of the magazine, I quote:

"Anakapalle Gurugaru, Guruji’s Guru – an avadhoota, an adept in 42 of 64 tantras – said of Guruji in one of his speeches that for his tapas on brahma jnana, he should have been in samadhi forever – but because of Devi’s will, He came to build this temple at Devipuram"

It was an excellent article, only that on reading the above line, the 'castle-of-hopes-on-moksha' that I had built up, CAME CRASHING DOWN.....I said to myself "If someone like Guru Amritananda, irrespective of his tapas, had to come to earth because of HER WILL, then what about an ignorant person like me??.....So, isn't 'moksha' permanent?....Is 'moksha' also temporary??"......It was a very disturbing thought and very very deep....For a while, I lost all interest in spirituality...What was I pursuing??? For what??? When it is all HER will, what does it matter if I'm enlightened or an ignorant fool??.....And then the thoughts-in-my-head go:

  • Do you still want SriVidya?
  • If I say no, it means that I wanted SriVidya only because of 'moksha' and now that I know that there are no 'guarantees', I'm backing out, which means that I'm selfish....and which means that no matter how 'pure' it sounds, 'moksha' was still like a business-agreement with HER....Like me saying 'conditions apply' to HER, to get HER vidya........
  • If I say yes, it means that I go through all those 'protocols' and 'work' and in the end, I may still have to come back to earth if it's HER will.....
  • Can't I have them both??? SriVidya & moksha??
  • Well, if Guru Amritananda irrespective of his tapas, had to come to earth because of HER will, what chance do I stand??

And so, continued the back and forth thoughts and I couldn't, with 100% conviction say that I wanted SriVidya....It was like I was in 'Trishanku swarga'...Neither here nor there....I couldn't say with 100% conviction that I wanted it nor that I didn't want it....

An answer through Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi:

I didn't know who this was and so googled info about the Guru of aacharya.......It took me to this website and one thing that really awed me was the mention that Lalithamba was seated on Sri Bhaskararaya makhi's shoulders & hence it was impossible to defeat him in spiritual debates........I had wondered  "How did you get HER to do that??.....SHE doesn't seem to hear my prayers, how did you get HER to sit on your shoulders??"......I had told Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi, "You know if God doesn't hear someone's prayers, I've read that the next best thing to do is approach God's devotees because God can never refuse the request of a sincere devotee.....You had somehow got HER to sit on your shoulder....SHE doesn't seem to hear my prayers, so if you don't mind, can you please sit on my shoulder??......You know if A = B and B = C, then A = C right??......If you sit on my shoulder, then it means that indirectly SHE is sitting on my shoulder.....Won't you please do that??"

While reading further on the same website on reading the the 2nd lakShaNas listed, it answered the deep question that had been bothering me for so long....I quote from the above site

"Prema which involves a desire of any kind cannot be bhakti. Many worship the Lord for various desires and some for mokSha or salvation. shAstra rejects both these attitudes as ashuddha bhakti. A true bhakta showers prema on the Lord without any desire, be it bhukti or mukti...Till the ghost of desire for bhukti and mukti lingers in one's heart, how can true premarUpI bhakti arise?.. Moreover, mokSha kAmi is the greatest of kAmi-s."

It was then that I realized that my bhakti, no matter how 'pure' it sounded to me, was still an ashuddha bhakti.

I thought I would email Arjunaacharya & change my sankalpa for the upcoming Varahi Kola Mukhi puja and Mahalakshmi puja but then I thought it would be easier if I told HER directly...So, I said " Please just cancel all that I had written in my sankalpa.... I don’t want anything from YOU - neither a desire for a daughter nor a desire for ‘moksha’....Now, what do you want me to do??   If Srividya is YOUR vidya and YOU choose who gets it, what role do I have to play??” ....And that day on 2nd August 2011, before I left work, I casually visited the Devipuram website and under “Latest from the Guru” section, it said  “Sri Vidya online course – Basic Level”……….And I cried..

4th August 2011 was when I received an email from Guruji with guidelines on how to signup for the class....I was overjoyed to finally find HIM.....Find my GURU...Then something caught my attention in Guruji's email...He had mentioned that he will be teaching about the Kaula maarga of Srividya.....I had thought " Is that what I think it is??.....The websites that I had read, did it not mention that the Kaula maarga or the left hand path of Srividya also uses the 5 M's....There was just one M that I was terrified about --- Maithuna....I had wondered "What is this 5 M thing??...I thought all that was needed was to chant a few prayers, show a few mudras and then BOOM you are enlightened.." {Sorry Guruji, but it was all HER doing...All HER thinking }...And then the thoughts in my head go:

I've already lost one chance at Srividya when due to ignorance, I didn't recognize the offer of Srividya initiation from the Meppad Temple...Should I miss this chance too??...They say opportunity knocks once but I'm blessed to have come in contact with Guruji..

So, I told HER " I don't want to again let my fears and ignorance get the better of me....I don't know anything about YOUR vidya....So, if that 5th M is maithuna indeed, then YOU need to find me a loophole....Didn't I read on that website that Adi Shankaracharya had used his yogic powers to enter into the body of that king to answer the questions raised by Ubhayabharati ??.....Do something like that to me too....Maybe I will be in a coma for a month or something...I don't know...Just find me a loophole....YOU are the expert in finding loopholes isn't it??.....How many stories have I read that talks about people asking Gods for boons, only for YOU to find a loophole in them --- Mahabali,  Hiranyakashipu, Markendeya, Savitri { and Satyavaan}, Shishupala etc....Do something, anything and find me a loophole..It's YOUR problem how YOU do it..."

{As I type this now I wonder, when I had told HER that I won’t ask HER for anything, why did I ask HER to find me a loophole?.....Simple answer – At that time, this question didn’t come.}

Guruji, I remember very well, the very first online class and your first words to us....You had said "Hi friends"....I was on "cloud 9" the whole day...I had thought "Guruji said I was his friend......His friend" and I thought " You know what Guruji, you are not just my friend, you are my BEST FRIEND....People who say kundalini cannot rise in a single day have not met you Guruji"......Those 2 words were enough to take the kundalini right upto a few inches above the Sahasrara chakra and all my fears about "a strict Guru" were vaporized, and why not Guruji, when you are my BEST FRIEND??

All your talks, your words, your simple nature, your 'innocent' attitude was enough to make me realize that you are a Brahmarishi....Only someone who is ONE with IT can be so humble, so free, so friendly with everyone.....Guruji, it has taken me several years to find You, but every single micro-second of it was worth the wait, was worth it for me to meet You and have You in my life......I have thanked Siddha Guru Swaprakasananda a number of times......Why??......For giving you the PERFECT name --Amritananada.....Amrita = nectar; Ananda = bliss......Not just any bliss, but the bliss of the nectar of immortality......My savior, my best friend, my Guru Sri Amritananda

Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu.

SriVidya - Yes or No?

SriVidya – Yes or No??? – Written on 3rd August 2011

I don’t know where to begin, but just so that this email doesn’t endup as a big novel, let me casually start  by saying that I’m  born in a Tamil family & am married into a Telugu family [mine is a love marriage arranged by both our parents] and currently live in USA..…My spiritual journey started in 1999-2000, initially as a search for mukti – freedom from suffering…..One thing led to another and that’s when I came across Kalki Bhagavan [founder www.onenessuniversity.org]. My mother-in-law is a very ardent believer in Kalki Bhagavan and for that reason alone, I did not pray to him per se….Because  my-yet-to-be-husband and I were still in college & at a stage where we were not sure if our parents would agree to our wedding and I didn’t want to ‘pray to Kalki Bhagavan, just-so-that-his mother-would -accept-me’….I remember telling Kalki Bhagavan, that if you really have some power, then, let our wedding happen & then I would pray to you and I told him frankly the reason why at that time I was hesitant to pray to him…I didn’t want to use ‘so-called-bhakti’ to influence my future mother-in-law.

I’m skipping a ‘Ramayana-like-proportion-story’ and forwarding to Febuary 2005 when finally we got married, with our parent’s support & approval….In May 2006, I had come on a 2 month vacation to India before joining work and while on this trip, with the sole support of my mother-in-law, I attended the ‘Maha deeksha’ class offered by Oneness University…All the teaching & classes that I had attended before, kind of did the ‘initial cleanup’ that enabled me to sit for this 3 week Maha deeksha class…At the time of Maha deeksha, when the padukas were placed on my head, I remember my body turning ice-cold and a ‘tingling sensation’ and for a few seconds, I saw Mt Kailash and Lord Shiva Himself……And then things came back to ‘normal’……We were told that a seed had been planted in us and given the ‘right environmental conditions’ would grow that would eventually lead us to ‘enlightenment’….We were told to be in the ‘now’, to experience life ‘as-is’ and that just ‘watch-your-thoughts’, because the very fact that you are observing your thoughts,  takes off the ‘charge’ in it and a few other things which I had written in my book and later, forgotten…..We were initiated to give ‘deeksha’ and be a ‘medium’ through which higher power would spread Itself…..We were told that a ‘Golden age’ would be beginning in 2012 and if humanity, as a whole, has to make it, 60000 enlightened beings need to be present on earth, inorder to make-a-dent-in-human-conscious and  usher in the Golden Age.

May 2006 – August 2011:

During this phase in life, spiritually-speaking, ‘moksha’ was my new destination….I had finally realized the futility of it all….Going round in circles, doing the same thing again & again, lifetime after lifetime….So “moksha” was it for me….There were times when I ‘watched-my-thoughts’ but most of the times, I was ‘carried-away’ and still going around in loops….The quest for ‘moksha’ was so intense that I had decided, “Enough is enough…I’m not coming back….Nothing is going to make me want to take rebirth again”…..In the outside world, mine was a happy family with my husband and a blessed son Pranav who was born in 2008…One thing lead to another and while my husband & I wanted to complete our family with a daughter, it never happened….I remember in May 2010, when at my doctor’s office, my doctor said to me “I don’t know what to tell you…There is nothing more that I can do medically, to make you conceive. You may need to see a specialist”….That afternoon, as I sat in my office crying, I had randomly browsed the web about rudhraksha [I think] as I had no interest in working, and I don’t remember how it started but I ended up on a website reading “Srimad Devi Bhagavatam”……Reading about rudhraksha on "Srimad Devi Bhagavatam" …...Just to ease the pain-in-my-heart, I thought I’ll order a few rudhraksha & wear them…..I thought,” I did see Lord Shiva during my Maha deeksha…maybe that’s where my journey continues….But hmm….I didn’t see Parvathi Devi…I wonder why?…But anyway, let me get some rudhrakshas”.

June 4th 2010:

I started wearing rudhraksha – a 3 mukhi, 4 mukhi, 11 mukhi & 12 mukhi…. And my husband thought I was crazy…I had even bought a few for him and he was not-so-serious about wearing it & would on-and-off wear it…I had read that wearing a 11 mukhi would enable a person to be regular in his/her spiritual sadhana & maybe it was indeed because of the rudhrakshas but my spiritual sadhanas ‘came alive’….I spent a few minutes morning & evening in front of God  [I hadn’t before]….I started Ekadasi upavasam during this time & though once-upon-a-time, it was tough for me to skip even one meal a day [my college friends would tease me because if I was even late in having my lunch I would get a headache], I could go the entire Ekadasi day with just fruits & milk .….I remembered reading in Devi Bhagavatam, that “If one wears rudhraksha on one’s wrist, one attains moksha”…..That led me to place my 2nd order for rudhaksha – a 7 mukhi bracelet ,8 mukhi bracelet and a 2 mukhi earring which arrived just in time for Navarathri along with a 6 mukhi bracelet that Neetaji [at the rudhraksha website] felt like sending to me.

Somewhere during this period, I watched a  video of Swami Dayananda Saraswati at a TED conference. It was an interesting topic & the only thing I remembered, a few days later is “Fake it and make it” --- If you don’t have compassion, fake it and make it….Few months later, I can’t remember exactly now, but one day, as I was breaking my Ekadasi fast, a thought came to me, “Why not offer the fruit of this Ekadasi fast back to Narayana Himself?” The first reaction was “No, I need this merit for my spiritual journey”.. And then the above words “Fake it & make it” came to mind… FAKE IT & MAKE IT….So, I said “Narayana, I’m faking it in order to make it… I offer the fruits of this Ekadasi fast to you….Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu..I offer it all to BRAHMAN”…And thereafter, all  the following Ekadasi fast’s merit too were offered to HIM….It didn’t feel so bad after all….Fake it & make it indeed…..

Navarathri 2010:

Maybe it was my desire for a daughter that lead me to ‘feminine’ slokas  i.e prayers to Devi but while browsing the St. Louis Hindu temple [4.5 hrs from my home] website, I learnt that they were having Sri Chakra Navavarana puja during Navarathri, at a cost that was reasonable, and anybody could sponsor it…I had randomly read about Sri Yantra in the same website that I had ordered my rudhrakshas from & this lead me to ‘research-about-SriChakra’ ..…And while my family contributed towards 3 days of the Navarathri Sri Chakra Navavarana puja at the temple – one day each for Durga, Lakshmi & Saraswati, I was curious to know more about Srichakra……This led me to a google group [Foundation for Indian Scientific  Heritage] and in turn to Dr. Ramakrishna S. Sharma [hereafter called aacharya], a Srividya upasaka himself and he emailed me a powerpoint presentation of “How to draw a Srichakra”….Aacharya called it a ‘drawing’ as it was not a complete Srichakra.

Spiritual sadhanas really took off after that..I was able to wake up early in the morning at 3.45am [the only time when I had time for myself]…Started chanting/listening to Sri Suktam, Kanakadhara stotram, Aditya Hrudayam, Lalitha sahasranamam [not regularly…and only because the audio took 30 min to complete and I didn’t have 30min in the morning in addition to my other sadhanas]…I would, when time permitted draw the ‘drawing’ that  Aacharya sent me, with Lalitha Sahasranamam playing in the background…All my spiritual sadhanas needed to be wrapped by 5.30 – 5.45am when I had my ‘earthly’ duties as a mother/wife/person and lunch & breakfast needed to be prepared & finished by 6.30am , when it was time to wakeup Pranav & get him ready for daycare, feed him breakfast [really challenging] and leave home to be in-time for work at 8 am after dropping off Pranav….

Did I mention that when I first wore rudhraksha in June 2010, for the next-5-minutes, I was sweating profusely ?? I had read that it takes a while for the rudhrasha to ‘align-with-your-body-chakras’ and that it was normal…Same thing happened, though not to such an extend with the next batch of rudhraksha…I would have severe headaches when I was wearing the rudhraksha earring and though I knew that it was just re-alignment of my ‘body-energy’, there were times when I would take off the earring and the headache would go away….And I would wear it again the next day….It took, maybe about a week for things to get ‘aligned’ and things were ‘normal’ after that….

Sometime during November – December 2010, I happened to read the book called “Autobiography of an Yogi”…An excellent book about the experience of Paramahamsa Yogananda…..I wondered, “Will I be able to recognize my Guru like the way Yogananda did?.....Will my Guru and I also share the same ‘spiritual chemistry’ that Yogananda & Sri Yukteswar did??”……That evening as I was preparing dinner, a thought came to me “Lahiri Mahasaya found his Guru Babaji Maharaj when he was 33 years old…..I’ll be 33 years old next June….O Babaji Maharaj, will you lead me to my Guru, when I too am 33 years old?”

It was during December 2010, that again, at the St Louis Hindu temple, they were having Vaikunda Ekadasi celebrations & I thought we’ll send in a donation for that, in addition to having the ‘Dattatreya abishekam’ done there….Now thinking back, it was after the Dattatreya abishekam, that I came across Dr. Pillai's website  and there was a morning ‘time-shakti’ puja that was being done everyday & I called-in to listen to it…I had read that the naadi leaves [ancient leaves] proclaim that Dr. Pillai, in earlier lifetimes was Sage Agastiar, Saint Tirujnanasambandhar, Dattatreya and other such incarnations…It might sound strange to you, but I do believe that there is a certain element of in-sight in his talks and I do believe that he is an ‘enlightened Master’.

God, this email is taking longer than I had hoped, but I need to give you a background info on Sage Agastiar, inorder to put things in perspective.

Sometime after wearing the rudhrakshas, while praying, I had asked God for guidance….I remembered listening to stories of Agastiar while growing up & had thought,” I have no one to guide me, I don’t know the path to moksha or whatever-is-the-highest-truth….I’ve had enough of ridicule from my family [parents & their side of the family] for my belief in Kalki Bhagavan, because he was a ‘human’…So, just so that I don’t waste anymore of my energy in justifying my beliefs, I seek guidance from Sage Agastiar……At least scriptures say that he was a great sage & if anyone needs to argue, they can argue with the scriptures”……So mentally, I would pray to Sage Agastiar and say “I don’t know the mantras, puja methods etc to pray to you….All that I know, is your name and that’s all I can chant…And I would chant his name 9 times– Om Sri Agastiar Maha munivare namaha”  [English Meaning: My salutations to the great Sage Agastiar]

Few months later, Dattatreya abishekam later, I landed on Dr. Pillai's website  and him being Sage Agastiar in an earlier lifetime, kind-of-agreed with my earlier request-for-guidance.

So continued my journey and one day, I endedup reading about Sri chakra puja on this website and found the Panchadasakshari Mantra. I thought to myself, “Why not chant the Panchadasakshari Mantra when I’m not able to chant Lalitha Sahasranamam in the morning?”….And so I did….I used the rudhraksha mala that I use to chant my other mantras and I chanted one round of Panchadasakshari Mantra. Later that day, while ‘googling’ about Panchadasakshari Mantra, I read that one should not chant Panchadasakshari Mantra without initiation and that Panchadasakshari was like “an honorable lady who must be had only through marriage” ie only through initiation from a guru….I asked myself, ”Well, aren’t there other types of marriage?? Like gandharva marriage where the partners can choose themselves? Few days ago, I didn’t even know what that mantra was and I ‘accidently’ ended up reading it & chanting it”….But again, who was I to question HER rules about HER vidya….If it says Panchadasakshari Mantra can only be had from a guru, so be it……And I didn’t chant it again.

There was a time when I thought “I’m wearing rudhraksha and asked Sage Agastiar – a vedic sage for guidance….Can Agastiar be in any way related to Devi puja? {I now realize what a stupid thought that was}..….Maybe God/SHE heard me, for SHE led me to read Lalitha Sahasranamam introduction and Sage Agastiar’s name there, was again, proof enough for me that I was being guided.

Life seemed ‘incomplete’ for me. I wanted to get some more rudhrakshas and my husband refused..He said “You look like a sanyasi as such….No more.” Moreover, the rudhraksha that I wanted were ‘higher mukhis’ - all the remaining rudhrakshas from 1 mukhi to 21 mukti and a bit expensive but definitely affordable .….My husband had said “Ask for a gold or diamond necklace and I will buy it but no more rudhraksha”…I said “What difference does it make to you whether I buy gold/diamond or rudhraksha…Let me get something that I want & like”.....He said “No more rudhrakshas”…God only knows how many lifetimes it took for me to realize that there is a ‘Higher Truth’ other than regular day-to-day existence and now that I try to go in search of it, why is it that my very family is the hindrance?  Frustration, anger and desperation later, I said “God, I give up……If you want me to move forward, you do it”.

It was a week before Shivarathri 2011 and a few days later, while talking to my school friend, she said “I’ve been meaning to ask you…You’ve given me deekshas many times before & helped me in the past. You also suggested that I wear rudhraksha…I’ve not had a chance to repay you and now I would like to…Can I send you some money?” {Her marriage was almost at the stage of separation/divorce & I asked her to wear rudhraksha as a last-resort to save her marriage & it did}…..It could have come only from God……I told her “I don’t need money but I’ve been asking my husband for a few rudhrakshas and if you don’t mind, can you please buy them for me???” …She was very happy to do it and so the day before Shivaratri 2011, my friend placed an order for my rudhrakshas – a 5 mukhi, 9 mukhi, 10 mukhi, 13 mukhi, 14 mukhi, 16 mukhi & 17 mukhi and they arrived exactly a week after Shivaratri…..I can truly say that Shivaratri 2011 was the first Shivaratri that I observed because it was the 1st time that I had tried to stay awake during Shivaratri and managed to do so until 2am.

These higher mukhi rudhrakshas were in a bracelet because I was told, that’s how they have been scientifically proven to work-the-best…..Well, science or not, it definitely helped me….For almost until upto a week to 10 days later, my hands were ice-cold while wearing the bracelets….I knew that it was the rudhrakshas working to again ‘re-balance’ my chakras/body/aura etc…..

On a different track, last year on Mahalaya Paksha, I had read how important it is to observe and thank our forefathers…But I thought “Can a woman do tharpanam? I’ve seen my father & uncle do it but not any ladies”….And so, I left it as such…..I had also read on the Agasthiar website the importance of tharpanam…Earlier during this year, I had again & again come across articles on Dr. Pillai’s website that stresses the importance of tharpanam… "If I have to recommend one solution for every one of our problems, be it financial, relationship or health, it is doing Tarpanam. Miracles do happen after the performance of the rituals”, says Dr. Pillai….In one of his articles, Dr. Pillai mentions how he had almost given up teaching because he didn’t see any change in humanity’s approach…..I knew exactly how he felt…..Didn’t I try to give rudhraksha to my family members?? “I’ve not heard about ladies wearing it” said my mother. “I’ll wear it, if I feel the urge to wear it” said my father. “It’s so sacred that I don’t know if we would wear it. Maybe we would keep it in the puja room” said my brother & his wife. “Don’t even think about asking me to wear it again” said my husband. “I’ve heard that one would ‘go crazy’ if rudhraksha is worn by a woman” said my aunt……Fine…...What can I do if it’s not in their destiny to wear it?.... When I asked God for the higher mukhi rudhraksha beads, I had said  “Since I’m still ruled by fear & so is everyone around me, if I get these higher mukhi rudhraksha beads, I’ll consider it a sign from God that I’m on the right track & that it’s ok to do tharpanam”…..Sure enough, S/HE sent the rudhrakshas my way, and so the same day I wore these higher mukhi bracelets [a week after Shivaratri 2011], I started doing tharpanam – Pitr tharpanam [to my forefathers] and Karunya tharpanam [ to other relatives, plants etc]….Didn’t I read in Devi Bhagavatham that “Even if one holds merely one rudhraksha seed purified & surcharged with Mantra Sakti, he uplifts his 21 generations…” So, even though I had the names of only the last 3 generations of my forefathers, I offered the tharpanams to the last 3 – 21 generations and said “I’ve heard that if one wear’s rudhraksha & does tharpanam, it greatly benefits one’s forefathers…Hence  I offer this pitr tharpanam..I don’t know the mantras/slokas to be chanted…This is all I know.. Please accept it, bless my family and go INTO LIGHT....And since this is the first time I’m doing tharpanam, please thatha & paati [my paternal grandparents] send me a physical sign – something that this mind & body can understand – that you’ve received this tharpanam”….I was at work, around 10am that morning, when my right eye [in my belief it’s considered good luck if your right eye flickers] started flickering……CONTINOUSLY-FOR-THE-NEXT-ONE-HOUR…..And didn’t stop even though I tried to ‘hold my eye down’ with my hand..….I said “Ok, ok…..I get it that you got the tharpanam”.....Later, I learnt that after doing tharpanam, the results were to be offered back to Narayana…So, ‘Om Tat Sat Brahmaarpanamastu..I offer it all to BRAHMAN”…And I was not faking it now {to make it}.

I can’t remember exactly when, but one day I read about Lalitha Trishati stotram here….Sage Agastiar’s name in the introduction of the stotram, again only made it more clear to me, that it was him guiding me….I used to listen to the stotram whenever I had time….Reading Lalitopakhyana and Tripura Rahasya too followed...

During this time, one day as I was cleaning out my pooja altar, I noticed that I had a picture of a Devi [from the Maangadu Kamakshi Amman  temple at Chennai] and it had a 'Sri Chakra-like' drawing on it. I was surprised because this picture had been on my altar for the last many years and I didn't really 'look' at it….I wasn't sure if it was a Sri Chakra and I remembered from my conversations with aacharya that if one keeps a picture of Sri chakra on one's altar, then one's future generations is bound to pray to it...That was the reason why I dont keep my 'drawings' of Sri Chakra on the pooja altar...I then remembered reading somewhere [on the many articles that I've read about it] that "Only someone who is chosen by DEVI gets Sri Vidya. It is said you do not choose Sri Vidya, but Sri Vidya chooses you. When you get it, when you look back you will see how you have been guided slowly and surely to your guru"…....So, I tried not to get too excited about this picture and thought that I'll know, if I was destined to know more about the picture...

May 2011:

We had been to India for my brother-in-law’s engagement ceremony..….During this India trip, I also had a chance to visit Thiruvannamalai and do girivalam [circling the mountain] as I had read that doing girivalam just once, would burn up the sins of 10 million previous births….Half a dozen temple visits later, we visited Maangadu amman temple in Chennai – my husband’s favorite temple and a temple that I’ve been visiting [on and off] since I was 15 years old….While in the sanctum of the temple, I casually asked the priest what ‘that thing’ was in front of Devi……Imagine my surprise, when he said that it was a Sri Chakra Meru { a 3D meru whose height was upto the priest’s waist}……’That thing’ was infront of my eyes since I was 15 years old & I didn’t even ‘see’ it !!! How blind was I???......And then I remembered reading in one of the forums “…….When you get it, when you look back you will see how you have been guided slowly and surely……” Yes, I can see how I’ve been guided, but where is my Guru? How will I know it’s him when I find him?? When will I find him? Is he/she already in my life & I haven’t yet ‘seen’ him?? Those unanswered questions remained…..

Once back in US after the India trip, I emailed aacharya & told him about the Maangadu Sri chakra experience…The next day, May 24th 2011, he sent me an email which contained a file – a preliminary sadhana he had said and his email also mentioned Devipuram ….. Devipuram???  It’s the first time I had heard about it…..The next day, on May 25th 2011, I began to ‘watch’ the video called ‘Devipuram Empowerment’ … I couldn’t clearly understand the mantras being chanted, but I watched the video anyway…..Everyday.

During this time, on Dr. Pillai’s website, there was a group chanting that was to take place, on a mantra SHREEM BRZEE…A mantra Dr. Pillai said was given to him by Sage Viswamitra himself…A mantra that would enable one to live a 200% life – 100% material & 100% spiritual…..Well, that sounded exactly like the life I wanted and extra money was always welcome, especially when I could use it in my spiritual path…My husband had said,”If you get any ‘free’ money, you can use that to buy rudhraksha ”.  I thought to myself, “If I have to beg, why not beg from God – whether God is HE, SHE or IT…No more asking my husband”.. And so, since May 17th 2011, I started the SHREEM BRZEE chanting …about 15-20 minutes in the morning, before sunrise [ I was told it was the best time]….I had read somewhere on Dr. Pillai’s website that pouring a few drops of water/milk on a shiva linga had untold benefits….I thought “Well, I don’t have a shiva linga at home, but I have a saligram…Shiva or Vishnu, what does it matter?…Isn’t it all a different form of the same BRAHMAN?”…..And so, I started bathing the saligram – Lakshmi Saligram - with water & milk every morning……Didn’t I read somewhere that bathing & worshipping the Saligram gives one a lot of punyam?? And that By taking the remnants of foodstuffs offered to shalagrama, one will get the result of performing many sacrifices.”--- Skand Puran…..Fine….. The water & milk after the abishekam [prasadam] became a part of our morning breakfast.

June – August 2011:

Did I mention how crazy I was after ‘moksha’??   I had read on the Shakti Sadhana webgroup and I quote “It is said in Tantra that for a person to be initiated properly into Tantra one must verily be SHIVA himself, or that it must be his last incarnation on earth…”

Didn’t I read in Devi Bhagavatam that if one wears rudhraksha from 1 mukhi to 14 mukhi then his/her body becomes verily the body of Shiva??

My interest in HER was fueled up…The main thing that attracted me to Srividya was the mention that inorder for a person to be initiated into tantra, it must be his/her last incarnation on earth or if a person gets initiated, it becomes his/her last birth....The quest for 'moksha' was so deep that it immediately related to me....Spiritually, I was at a stage where I was ready to do anything -- Anything for 'moksha'.

I had found the Devipuram website and spent a lot of time going through the materials posted…The FAQs on keeping a meru at home, finally, atlast clearly answered my deep questions about it…Until then I had come across websites that kind-of-ok’ed it, bluntly rejected the idea of keeping a meru at home etc…For the 1st time, I felt that someone was talking about a ‘practical-way-to-see-DIVINE’….More ‘googling’ about Guru Amritananda and Devipuram followed and I found this website where I came across the powerpoint presentation {that aacharya had initially sent me} on ‘How to draw a Sri Chakra’…..I also found the scribd document of the 2006 July Kadambari magazine… Ancient wisdom for modern day folks….It kind of quenched the thirst I had for so long…I would randomly read it, whenever I found time.

On page  4 of the above magazine, I quote, in pieces " Seven crore (70 million) mantras – sapta koti maha mantrah – are said to have emanated from the five faces of Shiva.......Obviously, it would be difficult to recite or do sadhana of all these mantras......."

Didn’t I read on the rudhraksha website that  “A Siddha mala ” [1-14 mukhi rudhraksha, gaurishankar rudhraksha & ganesh rudhraksha] is also called an “Akshamalika [garland of letters]. All mantras [whose count is 7 crores] & all knowledge reside in this mala” ?

On page 11 of the above magazine, I quote " It is said that the prescribed worship of the Sri Yantra, the Navavarana Puja, once performed, is equivalent to conducting 1,000 Asvamedha yajnas or horse sacrifices"

Didn’t I read in Devi Bhagavatam that the fruit obtained through the performance of 1000 horse sacrifice [Asvamedha yagnas], 100 Vajapeya sacrifice and making gifts of 100,000 cows are obtained by wearing a 11 mukhi rudhraksha ???

It was during this time-period that I was again told, that in order to chant the Lalitha Trishati stotram [and Panchadasakshari Mantra], one needs to be initiated by a Guru…It was really frustrating that any ‘Devi sloka’ that I came across had a ‘copyright’ [meaning ‘initiation required’ tag]…I was angry with HER, for HER rules….One morning, as I sat down to meditate, I was very disturbed….I said “ If everything is YOUR will  & when you know that initiation is required, why do you bring such slokas before me? What are YOU trying to say?”…I then remembered reading [page 59 of the above magazine] “Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly”.

I said, in anger, “Fine…Let’s see..YOU have a set of rules….A set of mantras/slokas that only an initiated can chant… Lalitha Trishati stotram and Panchadasakshari Mantra are ‘patented and copyrighted’…Fine…I won’t use them…I don’t want to ‘break’ your rules but I can find my way around it, right? What can I do if my tongue isn’t ‘pure’ enough for me to chant/pronounce the Lalitha Sahasranamam? If everything is according to YOUR will, then my situation is also because of YOU”……I then remembered that some Devi [I forgot HER name] had composed the Lalitha Sahasranamam – the 1000 names of Lalitha from HER infinite names….I said, “It was because of YOUR grace that ‘that Devi’ composed the Lalitha Sahasranamam and it is also because of the lack of YOUR grace than I’m unable to pronounce the Lalitha Sahasranamam…. Ok….. If I can’t use YOUR existing slokas, I will comeup with my own….I don’t know Sanskrit and YOUR slokas [other than Lalitha Sahasranamam] that I’ve come across are ‘patented and copyrighted’  [meaning ‘initiation required’ tag]……..Fine…..Let’s see…I know that ’namaha’ means ‘salutations’ and ‘vasini’ means ‘one who lives in’. I also know that YOU reside in the SriChakra along with crores of other Devis….So, my simple prayer to you will be [in Tamil, my native language] Sri Chakra vasiniyae namaha……Sri Chakrathil irukira kodana kodi Devigalaku namaha…..English Meaning: I salute the one who lives in SriChakra, I salute the crores [billions] of Devis who live in SriChakra….As far as I’m aware of, these 2 lines do not, in any way, violate your ‘patent and copyrights’….So, I will use them hereafter….Can you please, send me physical confirmation that this is ok??”…..And I chanted one round of these 2 lines on my rudhraksha mala… And when I finished chanting, I realized that it had started raining and it rained for the next hour or so.

And so, on-goes the insights in me, until finally, I reach page 45 of the above magazine and I quote “Anakapalle Gurugaru, Guruji’s Guru – an avadhoota, an adept in 42 of 64 tantras – said of Guruji in one of his speeches that for his tapas on brahma jnana, he should have been in samadhi forever – but because of Devi’s will, He came to build this temple at Devipuram"

It was during this turmoil period, that in an argument, my husband *unknowingly* [HER WILL??] said “Fine….You do what you what with your salary and I’ll do what I want with mine”…. I thought “Why not do some of the things that I’ve wanted to do?”..... There was a temple in Meppad, Kerala that offered pujas/homas etc and I had spoken to the Aacharya of the temple [who happened to belong to the lineage of Guru Amritananda of Devipuram] and had requested Varahi kola mukhi puja, Sri Durga nitya puja and Mahalakshmi puja to be done for my family. For the puja sankalpa [desire] I asked that SHE give what SHE thinks is best for my family and all that I asked for myself was to ‘Guide me in the path of the Higher Truth’…..PS: A week later, after things cooled down at home and things came back to ‘normal’, well, shall I say that my husband was surprised to find out that I had spent ‘X’ amount for the puja….I said “You said I could do whatever I wanted ”… He said,“ From now on, I have to be careful in what I say to you in anger…” And all I could do was smile….Didn’t I read somewhere that the Goddess loves fun??

And so I remained in 'Trishanku swarga' until last week [July 28th 2011] when in an email to the google group, aacharya mentioned his Guru lineage -- That he was a 5th generation direct disciple of Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi. I hadn’t heard the name before, so I ‘googled’ information on Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi and clicked on the first link that came up..It took me to a website that had stories about the life of Sri Bhaskararaya Makhi...And while reading further, I landed on this link on the same site and on reading the 2nd lakShaNas listed, it answered the deep question that had been bothering me for so long....I quote from the above site

"Prema which involves a desire of any kind cannot be bhakti. Many worship the Lord for various desires and some for mokSha or salvation. shAstra rejects both these attitudes as ashuddha bhakti. A true bhakta showers prema on the Lord without any desire, be it bhukti or mukti…. Till the ghost of desire for bhukti and mukti lingers in one's heart, how can true premarUpI bhakti arise? Moreover, mokSha kAmi is the greatest of kAmi-s.”

And I realised that my bhakti, no matter how 'pure' it sounded to me, was still an ashuddha bhakti....

It was infact yesterday [2nd August 2011] that I wrote to aacharya about the above insight and I haven’t yet heard from him…I told HER, “ Now that I don’t have anything to ask of you, neither a desire for a daughter [isn’t a daughter too a ‘temporary’ thing in life?] nor a desire for ‘moksha’, what do you want me to do??   If Srividya is YOUR vidya and YOU choose who gets it, what role do I have to play??” And yesterday, before I left work, I casually visited the Devipuram website and under “Latest from the Guru” section, it said  “Sri Vidya online course – Basic Level”……….And I cried.

It’s been 78 days since I started chanting SHREEM BRZEE. It’s been 69 days since I first started watching the “Devipuram Empowerment video” and tomorrow – August 4th 2011 is when the “Varahi kola mukhi puja” will be conducted at the Meppad temple, Kerala.

Strange indeed is HER WILL and sense of humor.
